Abstract

This is one of a set of experiments designed for lower level undergraduate courses that incorporates novel thin films for drug delivery. The focus of the experimental set is to introduce pharmaceutical concepts to undergraduates while also incorporating general engineering educational objectives.   This contains both a student version and instructor version.

In this lab, students conduct a simple factorial experiment to determine the effects of different polymers on film characteristics.  Students will vary the amount of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer in their batch, and determine if these levels affect the final film thickness and surface pH.  The objectives of this experiment are: Students will be introduced to the factorial design of experiments; Students will use mathematical equations to determine factor significance; Students will develop models based on their factorial design results.

This experiment (and the others in this set) was developed by Rowan University as part of the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (SOPS).
