Creation of Dissolvable Strips Lab - Students and Instructor's Version

Abstract

This is one of a set of experiments designed for lower level undergraduate courses. The focus of the experimental set is to introduce pharmaceutical concepts to undergraduates while also incorporating general engineering educational objectives. This contains both a student version and instructor version.

 

In this lab, students will be creating dissolvable thin films using a casting method. A discussion about the different excipients and properties of polymers that affect the characteristics of the strips is given. Students also perform several quality control testing methods, such as; thickness, folding endurance, and surface pH.   

 

The objectives of this experiment are: Students will learn about the commonly used processes for industrial thin film production; Students will learn and use basic quality control testing methods; Students will gain insight into energy requirements for drying thin films.

 

This experiment (and the others in this set) were developed by Rowan University as part of the NSF-funded Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Structured Organic Particulate Systems (SOPS).
