Abstract

This overview of the pharmaceutical industry focuses on the manufacturing operations that present challenges from an environmental standpoint. These topics include the issues related to drug synthesis and how green engineering principles can be integrated from drug design to manufacturing. These challenges include approaches to solvent reduction, increase efficiency in use of raw materials and energy, and advanced process technologies to reduce waste. A technique of applying green engineering metrics is presented that can compare alternate production steps. The unique program at Rowan University prepares students to apply green engineering through integrated courses and the Rowan Engineering Clinic.
