You are here: ProjectsGoogle Flights - Cheap way to get tickets

About

After traveling more than three years in 30 countries on four continents, we propose to share with you the different tools we use to make our tickets cheaper to the fullest.

Before buying the tickets there is some information that is important to take into account.

* The more extensive the search, the more chances you have of getting cheap tickets: flexibility in dates, being willing to make more flight hours and stopovers, being able to leave from an airport close to the one you wanted at the beginning are key to saving money in the passage.

* If you are Uruguayan, for example, it is necessary to add Argentina, Chile and Brazil to your searches. When a good offer appears from neighboring countries, it is much easier to get to Uruguay, so the options are many and the prices are more accessible if other places are added.

In the Uruguayan example, the places where the best offers usually come from are Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile, Foz de Iguazú and San Pablo. You always have to look from Montevideo but it is not usually very convenient.

* As for the days, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are the ones that give the best results, especially on Tuesday. As for the schedule, traveling at night is usually cheaper but the best time to look for tickets is during the day. Offers come out tomorrow and sell out as time passes.

* Another excellent option to reduce a trip is to fly during those days and times when we all want to be on land, for example, December 31 at midnight, on Christmas Eve, etc.

* It is convenient to do the searches from an incognito window (it opens by pressing Ctrl + Shift + N). In all browsers there is an option to navigate from a window that does not give information about the website that we visited. Airlines sites often raise prices when they detect users looking for certain tickets. This secret does not always work but it has reminded us to always do it when we had doubts about a passage and after a little while looking at it it was a little more expensive.

* A good alternative is to find the round trip ticket in the same purchase and compare its price with the sum of a one-way ticket in a window and one single return in another separately, as if we were different people.

* These items increase and improve as our trip continues, because we acquire new tools and learn from new experiences. Therefore, as useful as the above is that you follow us on Facebook ,  Twitter ,  YouTube and  Instagram . Every day we publish something different to take you on a trip with us: piques, ideas, photos, dreams and more.

* Finally, it is key to know that longer distances do not mean more expensive prices. The prices are established based on many variables, so I chose your destinations with total freedom, something you will find.

* One extra pique: saving on luggage is possible. The airlines do not usually limit the size of the bags we ship, but limit ourselves in terms of weight. We have put our two backpackers in the same cardboard box (yes, supermarket ones) and we ship it as a single package. As the weight did not exceed the limit, everything was fine. The same happens if you use one of those cases / bag to put two suitcases or backpacks inside.

Now that you know the tricks to make your searches as effective as possible, we pass all the sites and techniques we use to get our tickets.

The first thing we do is enter Kayak , Skyscanner  and Momondo , the most efficient flight search engines. We always do it from a computer because applications usually give us fewer options.

Once these search engines give us the best result (or the best results in case they have similar prices) we go directly to the page of the airline that the search engine tells us and we try to get a ticket with the same dates. Sometimes, direct from the airline's website is cheaper, but not always.

After comparing these options, write down the best flight and enter the Optifly mobile application, which tells you all the airlines that travel from one destination to another. Go to the website of each company to see what price they offer you and maybe you will find something even better.

To this work, add the prices of local lowcost (low budget airlines in each country), which are usually excellent options, although the planes are a little more uncomfortable and the service does not include anything for the basic price. Many times, low cost does not appear in search engines but can be easily googled.

Skyscanner has several interesting things. In the destination option you can put "anywhere" and it tells you which are the cheapest tickets for different destinations in the world on the dates you determined. You choose the dates you want to travel, the page suggests cheap destinations and fly. You can experience it here .

Another similar option allows you to choose the departure and destination without the dates and the page suggests the most accessible dates. You can experience it here .

The Momondo search engine is useful to check passages with flexible dates. Put the dates you want and the system suggests the cheapest and closest to those days of departure and return, with more flexibility than other pages.

For Kayak it is better to register and generate a user. After entering you will have additional options such as the possibility of seeing prices throughout the month, for example.

However, the key in this whole issue of getting tickets is to set up travel alerts. In this way, the page sends you all the flight information you are looking for every so often, chosen by you.

For example, if you want to go from Uruguay to France, look for a flexible date from Montevideo to Paris (always put cities and not airports, because there may be an airport with cheaper flights), then another from Buenos Aires, another from Iguazú and another from Saint Paul. Then change the destination city and do the same. It takes time but it's a few minutes and you can save a lot of money. You can put continents or countries, not just cities. In the case of Europe it is almost the same place where you arrive, because then with a low cost you can travel to the final destination for very little money.

Both Kayak and Skyscanner send you by mail suggestions of flights similar to the one you want to find if you configure the corresponding alarms. The software updates your search daily, incorporating new offers, and saves you a lot of time. You look once, the alarms look for you every day and make your life easier (and above all, the cheapest trips!)

Here we explain how you should do it, step by step .

As a complement to all the previous effort and to be sure that we get the best tickets available, we always check these sites that offer good offers.

With the experience of all we help each other to continue traveling.

If you are asking about visas, we put together a list of each country in the world and the requirements they ask of those of us who have a Uruguayan passport. Also, look for tips to stay cheap , eat and move cheap and soon to enter attractions paying less.
