Top tips for Aromatherapy Oils in the Home

Essential Oils can be used to treat inflammation, digestive disorders, and various other health conditions. Similarly, they also prove to be useful in reducing stress, relaxing mood and provide relief in anxiety, depression, and other mental ailments since they have a calming effect on our mind.

Aromatherapy also sometimes referred to as essential oils therapy is a treatment in which natural extracts of plants and roots are mixed with other aromatic compounds in a diffuser. This treatment is said to have positive effects on our mind and body and therefore it is necessary to do it in the right way.

Today, we are going to give you some tips regarding the use of aromatherapy oils in the home.

Tip 1 – Use a diffuser

To gain maximum benefits from aromatherapy it is necessary to diffuse the essential oils properly in a room or specific area. It cannot be done manually and therefore it is necessary to use diffusers for the same. Diffusers are nothing but devices that are operating with the help of heat or electrical energy.

Some diffusers require that you mix water and essential oils so that the mixture gets dilute whereas you can use raw unadulterated oils in others. We recommend you to use diffusers that disperse the molecules of essential oils slowly in the atmosphere.

Tip 2 – Choose the oils carefully

Different aromatic oils have different effects on your mind and body. Therefore, you need to be careful while choosing them. Also, you can use two or more essential oils at once to maximize their positive effects.

For example, chamomile, lavender, and frankincense essential oils have a soothing effect on the mind and therefore can be used to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety. Similarly, peppermint, bergamot and some other oils have a stimulating effect on the mind and therefore they can be used to deal with stress and depression.

Tips 3 – Other methods of using the aromatherapy oils

Spray bottles - We have discussed the method of diffusion of essential oils earlier but there are other ways as well. We use liquid spray bottles in our home to water the small plants. A few drops of aromatherapy oils can be combined with water and sprayed in the room if it stinks or just to change your mood. However, do not forget to clean the bottle thoroughly before using it.

Cotton balls - Similarly, you can sprinkle a few drops on cotton bowls and place them in a bowl for a more personalized inhalation. This method is known as dry evaporation and by using this method you can spread the molecules in a limited area and therefore you need to keep the bowl near you. You can also directly sniff the cotton balls for a more powerful dose.

Steam – For experiencing an intense effect you can pour hot steaming water in a glass bowl and add a couple of drops of essential oils in it. Now, cover the bowl and your head with a towel and inhale deeply. Do not open your eyes while breathing or it may cause irritation. Moreover, only use a couple of drops of oil since it is a direct method and using several drops might be too powerful to handle.

Tip 4 – Soothing bath

If you want to apply the aromatherapy oils topically to relax your body then you can pour some drops of essential oil like lavender in a small bowl and mix a couple of drops of honey, vegetable oil, and milk in it. Add this mixture in a hot bathtub or bucket filled with steamy water and enjoy a stress-busting bath!

Tip 5 – Fighting insomnia

If you are suffering from insomnia i.e. sleeplessness, then you can dilute lavender oil or any other soothing essential oil with a carrier oil like coconut or grapeseed oil. Rub this mixture all over your body and the soothing effects of oil will help you sleep faster.

Tip 6 – Be careful while applying or inhaling

While applying the aromatherapy oils on your skin directly ensures that it is diluted with water or carrier oil. Direct use of oil can cause skin burns as these oils are highly concentrated.

The same goes while inhaling these oils. Do not inhale the oils directly as its effect can be overwhelming. Always use a diffuser or if you don’t have it then you can use a tissue, cotton balls, or any other substance to dilute its effect.

Tips 7 – Consult with a doctor

If you are dealing with a psychological issue or if you have a skin ailment or disease then you should consult with a doctor before using these oils. The same goes for pregnant women and for people who are suffering from severe health conditions.
