How to Cut Felt on Cricut Explore Air 2: Ultimate Guide

Are you going to work on felt? Before this, you must learn how to cut felt on Cricut Explore Air 2. Working with felt may seem easy, but it’s a bit tricky. Felt is one of the best materials for making beautiful DIY projects, and I have created so many crafts using it.

But, we need to be extra careful while cutting the felt. Many people make mistakes on their first attempt when using felt. Besides, I love creating flowers and shapes to decorate my house. For this, I need a machine that can easily cut the material with pro-level outcomes.

Don’t be surprised whether the Cricut Explore Air 2 will cut this felt or not! Since I have already created a project using felt on the Explore, I will show you how to cut it on this machine. Once you cut out the felt, you will be cutting like a pro! So, let’s delve into this blog to learn more about it!

Step 1: Gather Essential Supplies

In this tutorial, I am going to make a simple project using my felt and Cricut Explore Air 2. But there are some items you must collect before you learn how to cut felt on Cricut Explore Air 2.

Here are the items you will need to begin this project:

  • Explore Air 2 cutting machine
  • Design Space app
  • Cricut Felt
  • Fabric Blade or Fine Point Blade
  • StrongGrip cutting mat

Step 2: Create a Design in the Design Space

After gathering the supplies, I will create a design that I can cut on my felt material. Here, I have added a simple heart-shaped design. To add this simple design to your canvas, you need to open the Design Space on your device.

Then, you will need to start a new project and look for a heart-shaped, ready-made design. Also, this small design is the best for anyone who is going to cut this felt for the first time.

Here’s what I added to my canvas! Add it to your canvas and start reshaping or resizing it as per your requirements.

Step 3: Set the Tool & Material

After completion of the design, I am going to set the material and tools. For this particular project, I am using a separate tool as felt has a lot of debris, and I can’t use the same tool for another project. It might ruin my project, so it’s always good to keep a separate one.

Although the above suggestions are optional, you are free to use any fine-point blade that you prefer.

Now, hit the green Make It button given on the upper right corner of the screen. Once you hit the Make It button, your project will appear on a mat in your Design Space. Here, just click on the Continue button given in the lower right corner.

Subsequently, on the machine, you have to set the dial to Custom. Since I am teaching you how to cut felt on Cricut Explore Air 2, you need to select Felt on Design Space. For this, you should search Felt Wool on the search bar and select it.

Step 4: Load the Mat and Start Cutting

Once we have set the material and tool, we will now load the mat into our Cricut Explore Air 2. To load, you will need to hit the arrow button on the machine. Once it is loaded, you have to press the C button on the Explore cutting machine.

After that, your machine will start cutting your design on felt. As the cutting is done, you can unload the mat by pressing the arrow button on the machine. Carefully pull the felt design off the cutting mat, and you will have your design ready to be used anywhere!

I am certain that you have understood how to cut felt on Cricut Explore Air 2. With this easy-to-follow guide, it will be easy to make a similar project using the same material and machine.

FAQs

Question 1: What blade to cut felt on Cricut Explore Air 2?

Answer: The Bonded Fabric Blade is the most common blade used for cutting felt material. I always prefer this tool or blade to cut the felt. And this blade is very compatible to use with your Explore cutting machine. However, if you have a bit thicker felt, then you need to use the deep-cut blade.

Question 2: What is the right Cricut mat for cutting felt?

Answer: Most felt projects can be cut on the standard grip-cutting mat (a green mat). However, if you want to cut thick felt material, then you should use a strong grip cutting mat, which is available in purple color. So, you have various good options available for cutting these felt materials.

Question 3: What settings are suitable to cut felt on Cricut Explore?

Answer: When cutting felt on an Explore, you will have three felt settings options. First is Felt, in which the pressure is lowest and cuts twice. Meanwhile, the felt wool fabric needs more pressure and can be cut five times. Lastly, the third setting is Felt, Wool Bonded, which has a tad more pressure but can be cut only two times. However, the Felt settings work well for me, especially when cutting Cricut brand felt and stiff felt.
