A Guide On Temperature Control While Growing Cannabis

Venturing into cannabis cultivation can be a rewarding experience if pursued with the proper knowledge. Understanding the importance of each factor and its effects on the growth and potency of cannabis is necessary to reap a successful yield. One such factor that requires your attention throughout the growth is temperature.

Cannabis plants are sensitive to their environment`s temperature. Balancing the temperature can significantly increase yield, whereas even small changes can severely affect the plant’s health and buds. Here we will explore the role of temperature in cannabis growth and maintain it at optimum levels for best results.

Why Does Temperature Matter?

Before we explore different ways of optimizing temperature in grow areas, let us understand in detail its importance on cannabis cultivation. The best temperature range for your plant depends upon its growth stage.

  1. Seedling – Seedling has no root system, then, therefore, requires 20-25 degree Celsius temperature when the lights are on. The temperature should not fall below 4 degrees Celsius when the lights are off.

  1. Vegetation – A slight increase in temperature is tolerated during this time. While the root system captures water from the soil, the leaves will help with evaporation, thus cooling the plant. The temperature lights can vary between 22- 28 degrees Celsius, whereas the light-off temperature should never fall below 4 degrees Celsius.

  1. Flowering – Temperature influences the health of the buds at this point. Therefore lowering the temperature slightly might come in handy. The average temperature should fall between 20 - 26 degrees Celsius under lights on condition. Lights off temperature restrictions are the same as vegetation stage.

  1. Two weeks before harvest – Balancing the lights on temperature to fall within 18 – 24 degrees Celsius at this stage can enhance the flavors, potency, and aroma of the flowers, such as in the case of Afgooey strain. The lights off temperature can also go as low as – 10 degrees Celsius, although it is not recommended to expose the buds to low temperatures.

But why is it important to stick to these ranges?

When Too High

Although plant death is not a consequence of high temperature in cannabis, it does slow down the rate of growth. Temperatures shooting above 26 degrees celsius, especially during the flowering stage, can affect the integrity of the buds. It can also significantly affect the flavors and potency of the yield.

High temperatures make cannabis plants more susceptible to infestations, such as spider mites. It further catalyzes water absorption, leading to excess nutrient departure from the root, resulting in nutrient burns on the leaves.

When Too Low

Cold temperature also affects the natural growth rate of the plant. Temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius can cause shocks that can induce stunted growth or death of the plant.

Although some varieties may seem to survive the temperature, the drop in yield quantity and quality will reflect on the effect of low-temperature exposure. The dampness from low temperatures also increases the risk of molding.

Ways To Maintain Optimal Temperature For Cannabis Plants

Use A Dehumidifier

Balancing the humidity in the growing area can be an efficient way of maintaining the optimum temperature. Warm air tends to hold more water compared to cold air. Thus the relationship between relative humidity and temperature can help create the optimum growing conditions for cannabis.

A dehumidifier typically dries out the air in the room that reduces the moisture levels. Although the device cannot lessen the temperature directly, the fall in moisture levels creates a cooler environment suitable for cannabis plants.

Install HVAC Systems

HVAC refers to an integrated system for enclosed spaces that can appropriately heat or cool down the area. They also improve ventilation for healthy growth. It requires a substantial amount of investment to raise the infrastructure and also increases electricity expenses. But it can be a worthy investment for large, commercial areas as it can significantly improve yield.

Install HAF Fans

Improving ventilation exposes the plants to fresh air from the outside. It helps to balance the temperature within the area naturally. A simple method to do this would be to open the window in the indoor facility to let the fresh airflow.

To increase the efficiency of the process, especially in large growing areas, you can use HAF or horizontal airflow fans. They improve air circulation in the area to distribute the temperature evenly. This way, you can avoid plant damage due to microclimates. HAFs also eliminates the risk of dead air zones that could cause slow growth in certain parts of your grow area.

Invest In Air Conditioners And Space Heaters

If HVAC seems like a large risk for your area, you can invest in independent heating and cooling systems using air conditioners and space heaters. They are relatively easy to install and tend to give good results.

Try Shade Curtains

Shade curtains are ideal for keeping bright lights and high temperatures away from damaging your plants. The design can provide up to 50 percent reduction in light intensity to save the plants during the brightest and hottest hours of the day.

You can install retractable curtains on the windows to lower if necessary. You can also spray whitewash on the greenhouse roof during the hot months and remove them as colder months approach.

Conclusion

Ensuring optimum temperature conditions in the grow area is crucial for the health of the cannabis plant. It can influence improved yield and pest resistance for the plant. Invest in high-quality sensing equipment and air circulation systems to maintain and monitor proper temperature balance at all times.
