Abstract

Rowan Chemical Engineering faculty and students are using their "engineering clinic" program to examine active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) syntheses for pollution prevention opportunities. Solvent use and waste reduction strategies are the primary area the group has investigated for the pharmaceutical industry. Several recent studies with Pfizer and Novartis will be presented, showing how life cycle analysis can be used to determine overall environmental footprint reductions with greener designs.
