Abstract

This workshop consists of an interactive presentation integrated with example problem and demonstrations to teach concepts of pharmaceutical engineering relevant to core chemical engineering principles such as material and energy balances, transport phenomena, and materials. An introduction will include an overview of the pharmaceutical industry with a particular focus on drug development. This will be followed by a discussion of active pharmaceutical manufacture, drug formulation, and drug delivery. The active learning exercises and demonstrations can be used directly in introductory and core chemical engineering courses as well as outreach activities. These educational materials convey essential concepts in pharmaceutical terminology, drug delivery, and manufacturing. Experiments and demonstrations on drug delivery and particle technology and mixing are also included.
